Moving home is a big step. Here’s a selection of the questions that our residents and their families ask most often.

General

QWhat sort of activities do you organise at Ashfields House?

We have a full seven-days-a-week programme of activities. Here’s a list of the sorts of things we do.

QIs it possible to try Ashfields House out for a trial period?

A

Yes, you can. We understand that moving to a care home can be quite a challenge for some people. We want you to be happy here so we’re more than happy to let you try it for a short time to see how you get on. The majority of residents who give Ashfields House a try, choose to stay on.

QDo I get a say in how Ashfields House is run?

A

We have a residents’ meeting once a month when everyone has a chance to air their views. Since Ashfields House is your home, you have every right to say what you think about how we manage it.

QIs there a waiting list?

A

Yes, there is a waiting list.

Finance

QWho owns Ashfields House? Is it part of a group?

A

Ashfields House is a privately owned care home. It’s not part of a group. The owner is fully involved in the day-to-day management. He’s on site most days of the week and his door is always open to residents and their relatives.

QIs there a written contract for Ashfields House?

A

Yes, everything is in black and white. You know exactly where you stand.

QDo I have to pay fees in advance?

A

Yes, we ask all residents to pay their fees each month in advance.

QAre there any extras to pay for?

A

Almost everything you need is included in the price. The only things that are extra are additional services such as chiropody and hairdressing. Talk to the manager if there’s anything you’re not sure about.

QDo I have to pay when I’m away – on holiday or in hospital, for example?

A

Yes, as long as you keep your room at Ashfields House, you will have to pay the full fees, even when you’re not there.

QHow much notice do I have to give if I decide to leave?

A

All we ask is that you give us one full month’s notice.

QHow much does a room at Ashfields House cost?

A

That depends on the size of room you take. At the moment, our fees range from £500 to £765 a week.

QAre my fees like to go up?

A

We review fees once a year in January. The fees we quote you are fixed until the next annual review.

Facilities

QWhat are the visiting hours?

A

There are no visiting hours. Your friends and relations are welcome to visit any time. No need for appointments, they can just turn up unannounced. We do, however, ask visitors if they can avoid mealtimes because that’s when we’re at our busiest.

QCan visitors join me for a meal or stay overnight?

A

Yes, your visitors can stay for a meal or overnight – but they will have to pay.

QIs there a laundry service?

A

Yes, we run a round-the-clock laundry service. There’s no charge, it’s all part of the service.

QCan I continue to practise my religion?

A

Yes, of course you can. We welcome all religions at Ashfields House. Depending how active you are, we can arrange for services to come to Ashfields House or for you to attend services elsewhere.

QHow often do residents bathe at Ashfields House?

A

We make sure that each resident has at least two baths or showers a week. If you prefer to bathe more frequently just let us know.

Food

QWhat’s the food like at Ashfields House?

A

We prepare food fresh every day. For lunch you have a choice of two meals (1 hot, 1 cold in summer; 2 hot in winter). For tea, there are four choices (2 × sandwiches, 1 × soup, 1 × warm).

QWhat are the meal times?

A

The residents have breakfast in their room , lunch is at 12.30pm, tea is at 5.30pm, although there is some room for flexibility.

QCan I eat in my own room?

A

If you prefer, we can serve your meals in your room.

QDo you cater for special diets?

A

Yes, we’re used to catering for diabetics. If you need a special diet, talk to us and we’ll see what we can do.

QCan I make my own hot drinks or snacks if I’m feeling thirsty or peckish?

A

Since we run a hotel service at Ashfields House, you won’t have to lift a finger. If you want something, just ask and we’ll make it for you. If you enjoy cooking, you’ll be pleased to hear that we often get involved in food and drink-related activities such as baking.

Accommodation

QDo dentists and opticians visit Ashfields House?

A

Yes they do. We make appointments as needed.

QIs Ashfields House suitable for wheelchair users?

A

Yes, for the most part the floors are level with a few ramps. There are lifts to the first floor.

QCan I see the room I might be living in?

A

Of course you can. We’re an open-book at Ashfields House. You can drop in any time to see how we live. We encourage residents to get a feel for their room and the entire home before they make a decision.

QIf I’m not happy, can I change my room?

A

Yes, if there’s a suitable room free, you can change whenever you like.

QCan I bring my own furniture and possessions?

A

Yes, you can make yourself as comfortable as you like.

QAre there TV and telephone points in the bedrooms?

A

There are TV and telephone points. For the phone you’ll have to organise your landline with BT. There’s also Wi-Fi in the building. To find out more, speak to the manager.

QDo all rooms have en-suite facilities?

A

Yes, they do.

QDo you have grab-rails and bath hoists in the building?

A

Yes, there’s plenty of help with walking or bathing for those who need it.

QAre pets allowed at Ashfields House?

A

Sorry, but you can’t bring your pets to live at Ashfields House. But pets are welcome to visit. We even have a PAT (Pets as Therapy) dog called Daisy who visits.

QDo you have separate sitting and dining rooms?

A

Yes, we have two sitting rooms, two dining rooms and one dining room / lounge. They are all for shared use. You can come and go between them as you please.

Care

QHow do you care for residents with special needs?

A

From our point of view, everyone has special needs because everyone is an individual. That’s why every resident has their own care plan. The best thing is to talk to the manager about the things that would make life more comfortable for you.

QDo local doctors visit?

A

Yes, we’re supported by two local practices – Anstey and Mountsorrel.

QCan my own doctor still visit me?

A

Yes of course they can.

QDo you offer chiropody or physiotherapy?

A

Yes we do. There’s a charge for chiropody. NHS provide the physiotherapy free if they feel it is required… if it is private or the residents request it then there maybe a charge.

QAre there emergency call systems in residents’ rooms?

A

Yes, we have an emergency bell/ chord in every single room. It’s very easy to operate.

QDo you care for residents with terminal illnesses?

A

Yes, we do. Every resident has their own care plan.

Qyou care for residents with physical disabilities?

A

Yes, we do. Every resident has their own care plan.

QDo you care for residents with dementia?

A

Yes, we do – but only in the early stages. As dementia progresses, people need a level of care that we can’t provide.

Location

QWhat’s it like near Ashfields House?

A

We’re in a beautiful semi-rural village. It’s quiet yet friendly, and there’s lots to do nearby.
